PHOTO LEGENDS
The world's most obsessive macro photography battle returns to the Critter Capital of the World. Black sand, alien critters, snoots at dawn. 120 photographers, 14 guides, one strait full of monsters.
Not a contest.
A pilgrimage for critter hunters.
Lembeh Shootout started in 2012 as a tiny gathering of 12 macro nerds in a wooden dive hut. Today it's the reference underwater shootout in Asia — part competition, part festival, part marine biology masterclass.
Lembeh Strait, between Bitung and Lembeh Island, looks muddy from above. Drop below and you enter the highest density of rare marine life on Earth. No coral walls, no sharks — just black volcanic sand where evolution went wild. Every dive is a treasure hunt.

Why Lembeh? Because nowhere else.
80% of winning macro shots at international contests in last 10 years were taken here. Pygmy seahorses, hairy frogfish, Pontohi — if you can't find it in Lembeh, it doesn't exist.
Blackwater + BonfireNight pelagic dives + beach talks with marine biologists.
Eco-first eventNo touching, no moving critters. Reef donations per entry.

HOW WINNERS SHOOT LEMBEH
Forget f/22 for everything. Winners shoot f/8-f/13, shutter 1/200-1/250, strobes at 45°. Get low — sand level. Wait 20 minutes on one frogfish. Patience beats gear. Bring +10 diopter, focus light 1500lm, and a pointer stick (never touch).
Read rules →WHERE TO STAY
Bitung side = 5 min to best muck, black sand right out front. Lembeh Island side = white sand + jungle + 10 min boat. Both work — we shuttle daily. All partner resorts offer camera rooms, Nitrox, rinse tanks with air guns.
Ask for lodging →Fair. Strict.
Transparent.
We protect critters first, photos second. Break ethics — instant disqualification, no refund.
Do I need to be pro to enter?
No. 40% are amateurs. There is Open + Compact divisions, plus daily coaching. If you can hover without kicking sand, you're ready.
Can I photoshop my shots?
Basic global edits only: exposure, white balance, crop 10%, dust spots. No cloning critters, no background swap, no AI denoise that adds detail. RAW + JPG required.
What gear should I bring?
60mm macro is king in Lembeh, 105mm for shy subjects, 1-2 strobes, snoot, +5/+10 diopter. 12-15 dives minimum — bring 2x batteries, 256GB cards, laptop for backup.
Is Lembeh good for non-photographers?
Yes — buddies snorkel, jungle trek, Tangkoko tarsiers tour, Bitung market. Gala night is open to all.
How do I get there?
Fly to Manado (MDC) via Jakarta / Singapore / Kuala Lumpur. 90 min drive to Bitung. We arrange pickup. Visa on arrival for most passports.
Your frogfish is waiting.
